It's something that comes with age and can cause your dog a big amount of pain.  Keeping your dog active which could just be a walk around the block everyday or a few times a day can help them with the pain of arthritis.  It's important for them to have a comfortable and soft sleeping place, not just a blanket on the floor. Find a nutritional food that is low in calories and measure the correct amount daily so no free feeding.  Free-feeding should never be an option for your dog no matter what size as they will keep eating if the food is left out.
